چکیده

Here we present a pilot study into whether elliptical galaxy counts alone, can place a useful constraint on the Ω M − Ω Λ-plane. The elliptical galaxy counts are drawn from three surveys: The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (16 > B KP N O > 20), the B-band Parallel Survey (20 > B AB > 24) and the Hubble Deep Fields (23 > B AB > 28). The elliptical luminosity function used in the modeling was derived from a combination of the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue, the two-degree field galaxy redshift survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (M E/S0 * = −19.90, φ E/S0 * = 0.0019 Mpc −3 and α E/S0 = −0.75 for H o = 75km/s/Mpc). We adopt a benchmark model and tweak the various input parameters by their uncertainties to determine the impact upon the counts. We find that if the faint-end slope of the elliptical galaxy luminosity function is known to ∆α < 0.1, then over the magnitude range 16 < B < 23 the counts depend most critically upon the cosmology, and can be used to place a weak constraint on the Ω M − Ω Λ-plane.

The Sum Graph of Non-essential Submodules

Throughout this paper, R will denote a commutative ring with identity and M is a unitary R- module and Z will denote the ring of integers. We introduce the graph Ω(M) of module M with the set of vertices contain all nontrivial non-essential submodules of M. We investigate the interplay between graph-theoretic properties of Ω(M) and algebraic properties of M. Also, we assign the values of natura...

N ov 1 99 6 The Flat Spectrum Radio Luminosity Function

The number of lenses found in the JVAS survey of flat-spectrum radio sources for gravitational lenses is consistent with statistical models of optical surveys for lensed quasars. The 90% confidence limit on Ω 0 in flat cosmological models (Ω 0 + λ 0 = 1) is approximately 0.15 < ∼ Ω 0 < ∼ 2. Depending on the RLF model, we predict 2.4 to 3.6 lenses in the JVAS survey and in the first part of the ...

We use the existing catalog of Damped Lyman–Alpha (DLA) systems to place constraints on the amount of evolution in the baryonic content of galaxies and on the value of the cosmological constant. The density of cold gas at redshifts z = 3 ± 1 is obtained from the mean HI column density of DLAs per cosmological path length. This path length per unit redshift is in turn a sensitive function of the...

New limits on Ω Λ and Ω M from old galaxies at high redshift

The ages of two old galaxies (53W091, 53W069) at high redshifts are used to constrain the value of the cosmological constant in a flat universe (ΛCDM) and the density parameter Ω M in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) models with no Λ-term. In the case of ΛCDM models, the quoted galaxies yield two lower limits for the vacuum energy density parameter, Ω Λ ≥ 0.42 and Ω Λ ≥ 0.5, respectively. Altho...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Accurate synthetic models of stellar populations are constructed and used in evolutionary models of stellar populations in forming galaxies. Following their formation, the late type galaxies are assumed to follow the Schmidt law for star formation, while early type galaxies are normalized to the present-day fundamental plane relations assumed to mimic the meta...
